Sasha Rainbow’s short documentary shares the story of Kamali, a child who is being raised by a single mother and becomes the only girl skateboarder in a small fishing village. Kamali fights for her future in the male-dominated sport while her mother embarks on a journey to set herself free from her past. This film demonstrates how the two pursue their dreams and claim ownership of their lives in a man’s world. Kamali brilliantly challenges structural inequalities since it empowers all to confront and contest patriarchal dominance in sports and the larger culture. (Written by Maddie Fagundo ‘20)
