David Coon

David Coon is an Associate Professor of Media Studies at the University of Washington, Tacoma with a Ph.D. in Communication and Culture from Indiana University. His scholarship and teaching explore how popular culture and media shape understandings of identity, specifically with race, gender, and sexuality. His first book, Look Closer (Rutgers UP) published in 2013 deals with the “suburbanization” of media, and how popular culture prioritizes the promises of suburban life which are inherently conservative and exclusionary. Additionally, in 2018, Professor Coon published a book called Turning the Page (Rutgers UP), which investigates about how LGBTQ+ minorities have created organizations that help uplift and elevate the voices of queer filmmakers.
