Shu-chin Tsui

Shu-chin Tsui is the Director of the Asian Studies Program and anProfessor of Asian and Cinema Studies at Bowdoin College. Her research interests focus on gender politics but involve areas across many fields including film studies, cultural studies, and visual art studies. Her first book Women Through the Lens: Gender and Nation in a Century of Chinese Cinema (U of Hawaii P, 2003), discusses the appropriation of women in twentieth century China. Tsui added to her collection of admired work with her second book Gendered Bodies: Toward A Women’s Visual Art in Contemporary China (U of Hawaii P, 2015), which explores women artists and the portrayal of the female body. At Bowdoin she offers a variety of courses including “Ecocinema: China’s Ecological and Environmental Crisis,” “Hollywood Imagination of Asia,” “The Cultural Revolution through Film,” and “Fashion and Gender in China.” (Written by David Sparks ‘20)
